future spinning

While I was walking through the Breed Display barn at the New York State Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck a few weeks ago, I got to talking to the shepherd at the Shetland sheep display.

Before I knew it I was asking her when she is planning to shear this year.  "February," she answered.  "Why, are you interested in her fleece?"  She was referring to a beautiful ewe whose fleece I kept reaching into the stall to touch.

It was a done deal from the get go.

Which is why my husband escorts me through those areas at fairs :) I already have a lifetime supply.

She's a beautiful girl and you are very lucky to be getting her fleece. What's her name?

How exciting! It's so fun to see the animal and pick the fleece right then and there. Too bad we missed each other out there in NY.

I actually do know her name! she is called 'Dali', after Salvador Dali, the surrealist painter. apparently the shepherd saw a Dali exhibit, and when she saw the markings on Dali's face was reminded of some of the images in the paintings! :)
